January 2004
Robert J. Ryan, Sr., U.S. Ambassador to Niger, 1964-68, and long-time member and supporter of Friends of Niger, died at his home in Daytona Beach, Florida on September 17, 2003. 'Bob', as he was known to FON activists, was 89 years old.
Ambassador Ryan was born in Massachusetts and joined the Department of State in 1937. Upon retirement, he was appointed an Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations where he was responsible for overseeing the logistics of peacekeeping operations. He retired again in 1977 but retained an ongoing and active interest in both the Foreign Service and the United Nations.
Bob's love for and commitment to Niger never
flagged. He retained an active membership in Friends of Niger, was
strongly supportive of the organizatio'ns various activities and projects,
freely sharing his knowledge and his personal resources. In 2001, at the
Celebration of Niger event in Washington, D.C., Bob was recognized with
a Friends of Niger Special Achievement Award for his "important and
lasting contribution to Niger and its people and to the purposes of Friends
of Niger."
Ambassador Ryan is survived by his wife Mary, two sons, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Standing in the middle of the second row, Ambassador Ryan is flanked by his wife Mary and Nigerien President Hamani Diori. The photo was taken in 1965 at the presidential palace in Niamey on the occasion of a reception in honor of Peace Corps Volunteers and staff. In the bottom row, between President Diori and Ambassador Ryan is Niger Peace Corps County Director C. Payne Lucas.
In his June 10, 1963 speech at American University, President Kennedy said:
"What kind of
peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons
of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking
about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living,
the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better
life for their children -- not merely peace for Americans but peace for all
men and women -- not merely peace in our time but peace for all time."
FON
Announces Another
Trip to Niger:
Planning Begins for Early 2005
The FON Board of Directors has
taken the decision to begin the planning required for a second Friends of Niger
trip to Niger. The first trip took place in October 2002.
According to FON President, Jim
Schneider, "tentative plans envision the 2005 trip taking place early in
the year - January or February."
Schneider also indicated that
the 2005 trip will include many of the same features as the highly successful
2002 event, "with, perhaps, a little more emphasis on participation in
service activities or work projects."
Anyone with an interest or questions
related to participation in the trip is encouraged to contact Jim
Schneider
